this painting is in its second layer, meaning it’s only ever been this painting. I think there is a really different feeling to the paintings worked on over many years with layers on layers obscuring the last, because they’ve been so many other things. A singer-songwriter friend who had two of my older paintings in her home said she would look at them while she did her vocal exercises and she would see something different every time, colors, feelings, sounds. to me there is also something really nourishing and simple in the paintings that spill out as themselves without much effort or explanation. it reminds me of somebody who doesn’t question themselves too much, or being in love without knowing why. This was a rare one that came less from trying to work something out and more from a feeling of affection as simple, warm, generous, like the sun or coming home.
